ANCOM to slice interconnection fees by 30% in 2012
2012-02-10
The National Authority for Management and Regulation in Communications (ANCOM), the Romanian telecom market regulator, plans reductions of the maximum fees that mobile and fixed-line telephony providers can charge for the termination of calls. The cuts are planned to be introduced in two phases – on 1 March 2012 and September 2012, which will lead to more than 30% reduction of interconnect costs in the country.
The fee for interconnecting with Romanian mobile operators will be cut to 4.05 eurocents (€0.0405) per minute in March 2012 and further in September 2012 with a reduction down to 3.07 eurocents (€0.0307) per minute. Fixed interconnections will also decline in in September 2012 to 0.67 eurocents per minute.
According to the latest ANCOM statistics, mobile operators in Romania earned RON 850m (€198m) from the termination of voice traffic in their networks during H1 2011, while the total interconnect earnings of 51 fixed telephony providers in Romania hit RON 200m (€46.5m).
