16.9% more digital TV subscribers in Hungary in 2011

By the end of December 2011, the number of digital TV subscribers in Hungary has reached 1,657,977 with 16.9% more than in December 2010, while the number of analogue TV subscribers dropped by 4.8% to 1,184,017, based on data provided by the top ten market players in the country by subscribers and published by the Hungarian National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH). The share of digital TV grew by 4.9 p. p. to 58.3%. The number of wireless, including DTH broadcasting and HDig (Hello Digital operating in Budapest and its surroundings) subscriptions grew by 6.1% and reached 919,613.
In 2011, the rank of the top three players remained unchanged. However, all of them lost market share in favor of smaller service providers.
UPC, a US based company maintained its position as the market leader; nevertheless, its market share decreased by 3.1 p. p. to 25.9%. The second ranked player on the market,
Digi TV (owned by the Romanian company
RCS&RDS, one of the largest providers of communication and television services in the region) also registered a decrease, and had 23% of the market, with 2.9 p. p. less than in December 2010. The market share of
T-Home (owned by Deutsche Telekom, also known as Magyar Telekom) decreased by 2.6 p. p. to 22.4%.
