Vodafone - the third mobile operator in Hungary with market share of 22.6% in terms of subscribers - launched 3G services on Budapest’s blue and red subway lines, both in the stations and tunnels. The yellow line will feature the same service from early January 2012. Budapest is ahead of many Eastern European cities and even London, where the 3G network on the tube is going to be available by the time of the 2012 Summer Olympics.
It is unlikely that the other two operators - Magyar Telekom, the market leader and Telenor, the second operator by number of subscriptions - will develop their own infrastructure to cover the metro line, they will rather buy capacity from Vodafone. Telenor is currently undertaking negotiations with Vodafone and is expected to launch its service in early 2012.
