Slovak Telekom officially closed down Flash-OFDM wireless data network on 30 September 2015. The only exceptions are now the areas of Bratislava and Kosice. The operator stopped acquiring new subscribers for the service in April 2014. Since then users have been gradually transferred to other services. Slovak Telekom representatives point out that Flarion, which was the technology provider, stopped to support it several years ago and thus the maintenance of the network was both chalenging and expensive.
A download speed of Flash-OFDM network amounts to 5.3 Mbit/s and a peak upstream rate reaches 1.8 Mbit/s. This is much less than a maximum theoretical speed of Slovak Telekom’s 3.5G DC-HSPA+ (42 Mbit/s), not to mention LTE. The operator claims that it plans to use the freed band to enhance its 4G data services.
