Megafon, one of the largest telecom operators in Russia, purchased the remaining three subsidiaries of regional operator SMARTS for RUB 780m (€12.6m), according to cnews.ru. All assets of SMARTS cost RUB 6.53bn (€105.4m). Megafon bought these three companies (SMARTS-Ulyanovsk, SMARTS-Penza and SMARTS-Saransk) due to their frequency resources in the 1800 MHz range. Firstly, this range was dedicated for 2G, but now it can be also used for 4G. About 12 years ago, in 2005 Megafon purchased the main assets of SMARTS for RUB 5.75bn (€92.8m). In 2014, one of the four subsidiaries of SMARTS was bought by another Russian telco, Mobile TeleSystems (MTS), for RUB 3.13bn (€50.5m). The next year, part of the company’s assets were purchased by VimpelCom. Ultimately, in Q4 2016 Megafon signed an agreement to acquire the remaining three SMARTS subsidiaries.
