About 68% of all prepaid SIM cards were registered in Hungary by 30 June – the mandatory registration deadline connected with the new regulation to fight against organised crime, according to local regulator NMHH. This means that around 2.7m out of 4m pre-paid SIM cards were registered. Simultaneously, operators cancelled contracts with pre-paid customers who failed to provide identification data required by new legislation. However, as stated by the operators, those who missed the deadline will be offered a possibility to recover their phone numbers and balances by signing new contracts.
Similar obligation, prompted by the anti-terrorism law, was introduced in Poland last year. It is estimated that the total number of deactivated pre-paid SIM cards in Poland reached ca. 7 - 8m.
